Michael Dubis Obituary

Michael F. Dubis, 78, of Waterford, Wisconsin, passed away on July 23rd, 2025, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital under the compassionate care of the hospice team.

Born on June 30th, 1947, Michael was the son of Walter and Chessie Dubis. He married the love of his life, Sandra, on October 3rd, 1970, whom he doted on throughout their marriage. Michael was a proud 1972 graduate of Marquette Law, where he founded "The Nice Guys" law school softball team, playing weekly slow pitch with friends and colleagues. In his younger years, he also showcased his sharp mind as a Milwaukee County Jr. Chess Champion.

For over 50 years, Michael maintained his thriving law practice, specializing in bankruptcy, probate, and real estate. His dedication to public service was evident through his 50 years as the Town of Waterford attorney. Since 1973, Michael served as a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustee for southeastern Wisconsin, establishing himself as one of the longest-running bankruptcy trustees in U.S. history. His career was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Wisconsin bankruptcy bar's most prestigious honor, The Dale Ihlenfeldt Award, in 2022, the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Distinguished Rating award in 2025, and consistently being named a Super Lawyer in Bankruptcy and Creditor Rights every year since the award's inception in 1991. Known as a straight shooter by clients and adversaries alike, Michael, though sometimes appearing gruff to outsiders, was always generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. He was especially patient and effective at guiding young lawyers through complex issues.

Michael is survived by his son, Michael; daughter-in-law, Shelley; his daughter, Michelle; and two grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Connie Stilley. A loving provider for his family, Michael cherished taking them on memorable vacations, including numerous cruises and trips to Hawaii and Jamaica. He had a special fondness for bulldogs, with his beloved Byron being his pride and joy. A devoted fan, he watched Milwaukee Brewers games throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Dubis; his mother, Chessie Dubis; and his two sisters, Antonina and Zuzanna.
