Dawn Stiles (nee: Petersen), 63, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a long and courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). True to form, Dawn faced every challenge with quiet strength, steady resolve, and a determination that shocked even the most seasoned of medical professionals. Time and time again they said, “this is it”, and she said, “no it’s not”, and yet again walked out of that hospital.
Dawn is survived by her daughters, Julie Dietz (Tim) and Cassie Teubel (John); her beloved partner, Tony Ulezelski, the love of her life, who cared for her endlessly throughout her illness and stood faithfully by her side for many years; her mother, Sandra Petersen; her sister, Terry Niemann (Craig); her brother, Gary Petersen Jr.; her cherished grandchildren; and many loved family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Gary Petersen Sr., and many family members and friends who welcomed her with open arms.
A loving single mother, Dawn devoted her life to her two daughters, Julie and Cassie. Throughout life, it was always the three of them, inseparable and deeply close. She was their world, and family always came first. Dawn was known for her calm, levelheaded nature and her incredible strength. She had a way of making everyone feel safe and cared for—she truly was everyone’s mom. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family to countless friends and loved ones who adored her.
Dawn built an impressive career in manufacturing, beginning on the assembly line and rising to become the first female supervisor in the company, and finally ending her long hardworking career as a senior buyer. When she wasn’t working or caring for others, Dawn could often be found fishing—her favorite way to relax, reflect, and enjoy a little peace, lord knows she deserved it.
Her family finds comfort knowing her suffering has ended and extends heartfelt thanks to St. Luke’s Hospital and the compassionate nurses and caregivers who supported Dawn throughout her many hospital stays. If you’d like to make a memorial donation in Dawn’s name it may be made to Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation.
A private celebration of life will be held for family at a later date.
Dawn’s greatest achievement was the love she gave—and that love lives on through her family. We will miss you deeply, but your love will always be with us.
