Virginia Marie Portz (nee Fricke) passed away January 25th, 2019 at age 98 in Mukwonago, WI. She was born May 4th, 1920 in Omaha, NE to Henry and Elsie Fricke. The family moved to Milwaukee, WI where Virginia lived for her school years, graduating magna cum laude from North Division High School in 1938.
On June 7th, 1941 Virginia married the love of her life Andrew Portz. They spent most of their married life in Waukesha, Wi; first on a family farm and then in a home they built nearby. In later years they spent winters in various southern states, finally settling in Tucson, AZ for ten years. They enjoyed many pleasant years socializing with dear family and friends.
Virginia was an avid bowler, loved playing card games, golfing, and square dancing. She had a talent for staying in touch with people through cards, letters, and phone calls. A poem from a card says it beautifully… “If life is measured by the way we live, the way we serve, the way we give… If life is measured by the words we say, the love expressed along the way… If life is measured by the smiles we share, the kindness, the way we care… Then life’s measure is clearly known, for these are the things you’ve shown”. Virginia showed these qualities in full measure.
She will be dearly missed and was a loving mother to James (Laurel) Portz, Judith Martin, Leonard Portz, and her daughter-in-law Patricia Portz. Grandmother to Adam, Jessica, Mark, Peter, Randal, and Todd. Great Grandmother to Alexandra and Samantha Birken, Cole and Ava Portz, and Elle Portz. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as both new and longtime friends.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband Andrew, her brother Henry Fricke, and her sister Jeanette Lambert.
Memorials may be donated to Seniors on the Go Mukwonago.
Per Virginia’s request there will be no memorial service.
Internment will take place at Prairie Home Cemetery in Waukesha.
