Leo J. Szymborski, age 96 of (South Milwaukee, Wild Rose, Waterford), peacefully passed away on December 17th, 2019 at Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove.
Leo was born January 11th, 1923 in South Milwaukee, WI to Joseph and Mary (Nee Woroniecki) Szymborski. He married Lila VanAirsdale on October 18th, 1947 in South Milwaukee.
Leo graduated from South Milwaukee High School in 1941. He served in the Navy during WWII, surviving both the Coral Sea and Midway battles on the USS Yorktown until it sunk in June of 1942. He was then assigned to the USS West Virginia where he participated in major Pacific battles, including the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa as well as the liberation of the Phillippines. he was honorably discharged in 1946. Leo then worked at Bucyrus-Erie for 38 years. They left South Milwaukee after retirement for Wild Rose, WI in 1985 and moved to Waterford, WI in 2008.
Leo is survived by his wife of 72 years Lila, three children; Sandi (Donald Larson) Schawn, Karen (Michael) Freimark, and Craig Szymborski; grand children Kevin (Kelly) Schwahn, Kimberly (Keith) Boivin, Breanna (Josh) Salas; great grand children Lila, Wesley, and Delaney Boivin, Greyson and Zaiden Salas. He is further survived by step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Helen (Edward) Musczynski, Eleanore (Jerome) Blavat, Estelle (Clarence) Dennis; brothers Alex (Betty) Szymborski and Joseph (Mary Jane) Szymborski; and grandson Todd Schwahn.
A service will be held on Friday, January 3rd, 2020 at 11:00am, at the Southern Wisconsin Veteran Memorial Cemetery Chapel (21731 Spring St. Union Grove, WI 53182)
