I really don't know what to write, as I'm not very good at this type of thing.
I guess I'll just shoot from the hip.
My Uncle "Kenny" as we called him was the person I looked up to as a kid along with my dad. Uncle Kenny was someone who I wanted to be when I grew up. He hunted, fished, and trapped. I remember him telling stories when I was a kid how he and his friend (I cant remember his name) used to trap muskrats, and mink at Bong down by Union Grove. Uncle Kenny told me he caught 700 muskrats one year. When I started trapping in the early eighties he gave me his traps, and a book on how to trap Muskrats and Mink. When I caught my first muskrat (rat) I had no idea on how to skin it and prepare it for sale. My mom (his sister) drove me to Union Grove, and Uncle Kenny skinned, and stretched it for me.
I remember as kids we always went to Kenny's lake (Pine Lake it was called, but I always thought it was his lake) we played in the dirt, swam off his pier, and went fishing. I remember one time, he, my dad, and myself went out fishing. Uncle Kenny caught a 42 inch Northern. I thought it was a monster fish ! I'm sure there is a picture somewhere. That fish was longer than I was tall !
My first time hunting we went somewhere close to "Kenny's lake" squirrel hunting, I wasn't old enough to have a gun but, he and my dad let me carry Kenny's 410 shotgun. I was told if we saw anyone else around I had to give the gun to one of them. We shot a few squirrels that day, I'm not sure if I ate them or not, my mom didn't like wild meat.
Another memory I have was when I was not old enough to hunt my dad and Uncle Kenny hunted together. I remember looking out our front window waiting for them to come home. They were driving my Uncle's station wagon. They pulled into our driveway, and had a doe on the top. I remember my dad lifting me up so I could see the deer and also touch her eyes ( for some reason I wanted to).
Uncle Kenny I'm very sad you're gone. I'm glad I was able to see you a few months ago. You were the best Uncle anyone could ask for. I will miss you, but I'm sure you and my dad are hunting and fishing together again. Save a big buck for me !!
Your nephew Bryan
